Quotes

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 18, 2009, 3:51 PM
Every once and a while, I love to go look through quotes of people that I admire. These are just a few.

Ben Franklin

"As we must account for every idle word, so must we account for every idle silence."
"Anyone who trades liberty for security deserves neither liberty nor security."
"Certainty? In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes."
"Distrust and caution are the parents of security."
"Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing."
"Even peace may be purchased at too high a price."

John Adams

"Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at individual discretion... in private self-defense."
"Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."
"I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy."
"In politics the middle way is none at all."
"Let us tenderly and kindly cherish, therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write."
"Liberty cannot be preserved without general knowledge among the people."
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

Thomas Jefferson

"A Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference."
"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government."
"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent."
"An enemy generally says and believes what he wishes."
"Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing."
"Every generation needs a new revolution."
"I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man."

Patrick Henry

"Give me liberty or give me death."
"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined."
"I know no way of judging the future but by the past."
"If this be treason, make the most of it!"
"The Bible is worth all the other books which have ever been printed."
"The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them."
"The great object is that every man be armed."

Nathan Hale

"I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."

Joseph Warren
" ur country is in danger, but not to be despaired of.... On you depend the fortunes of America. You are to decide the important questions upon which rests the happiness and the liberty of millions yet unborn. Act worthy of yourselves."

Mr. Adams - Damn you Mr. Adams!
You are obnoxious and disliked, that cannot be denied.

Once again you stand between me and my lovely bride...

Well, it's not entirely accurate, but it's a great movie. I own it, I watch it a bit more than I should probably, and I'm not going to lie, that's probably why I'm as big of a John Adams fan as I am. Also, why I take being obnoxious about my political views as a compliment :P

I'm just glad someone else has seen it! My dad is a big fan and he watches it ever 4th of July and I just eventually got hooked. ^.^

I know it's not entirely accurate, but it's just so much FUN! And I think it's a great place to start learning about the declaration and the revolution for the kiddies; It paints a really good picture of the CONCEPT of our rebellion. The big picture sinks in real well, even if some of those facts are askew, you dig?

Me and my mom are such dorks for John Adams xD it started with that movie, and then we watched the HBO series, and it was like, fuckin' John Adams <3 <3 <3

Our cousins tease us about it. They're like why don't you just get a bumper sticker that says "I  John Adams" on it?" And I'm like, why don't we have one of those.
